Labor statistics are gaining prominence on the Dominican public agenda following the announcement of technical cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Mexico to strengthen the administrative records of the Ministry of Labor.
Minister Eddy Olivares Ortega stated that having reliable data is key to understanding the labor market, measuring its changes, and designing more effective policies. The initiative was presented as a step toward more modern, evidence-based public management.
The project delivered by Mexico’s INEGI is titled “Monitoring and Evaluation of Indicative Variables from the Administrative Records of the Ministry of Labor of the Dominican Republic.” It was developed within the framework of the Bilateral Cooperation Program between both countries, with the support of the Vice Ministry of International Cooperation, AMEXCID, the Ministry of Labor, and the Mexican statistical institute.
The event was attended by Mexican Ambassador Carlos Miguel Aysa González and representatives of the institutions linked to the agreement. According to the Ministry of Labor, the objective is to improve the quality of records, consolidate a monitoring and evaluation system, and generate strategic indicators for policy formulation.

Olivares pointed out that labor statistics not only serve to describe the past, but also to interpret the present and anticipate future decisions. He mentioned informality as one of the main challenges of the labor market, a problem that requires precise measurements and sustained responses.
“Statistics not only allow us to know what happened yesterday; they are also fundamental to understanding the present and building the future of work,” the minister stated.
Vice Minister of the Presidency Olaya Dotel Caraballo highlighted that South-South and triangular cooperation help strengthen institutional capacities and accelerate development goals. Along the same lines, Carlos Hernández, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, maintained that the exchange of experiences contributes to a more efficient State that is closer to the citizenry.
An institutional step with economic impact
This type of technical support is relevant in a country where the quality of labor statistics influences decisions on employment, training, inspection, and social protection. When records improve, the State’s ability to detect trends, compare results, and adjust programs also improves.
The activity was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor in Santo Domingo, with the presence of vice ministers, directors, and technical staff of the institution, as well as officials linked to international cooperation. For both parties, the project reinforces a common agenda focused on stronger, more transparent, and innovative institutions.
