Since this Thursday, the eleven teams that will contest the U-18 Pan-American Pre-World Baseball Cup in the Dominican Republic have completed their training at the IPL Academy Complex in Guerra. The day was characterized by the players’ energy and the hosts’ warmth, who highlighted the country’s hospitality.
Team preparations
The Dominican Republic finished its preparation with a final batting session. Mexico, which arrived first, highlighted the warmth of the Dominican people and declared that its goal is to win: “We didn’t come to compete, we came to win”, said manager Enrique “Che” Reyes. The Aztec team includes players who have competed at the professional level, among them Alex Tolosa, third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds.
The United States, category champions, train with a roster composed of players from lower age groups, making them the team to beat.
The Nicaraguan team features pitching coach Gustavo Martínez, of Dominican origin, and director Ronald Garth, who played in the island’s summer league in 2004.
Greg Hamilton, Canada’s manager, expressed his enthusiasm for the Dominican heat and recalled that he has been visiting the country annually since 1999.
Tournament structure
Group A will include the teams from the Dominican Republic, United States, Brazil and Curaçao; Group B will include Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico; and Group C will be composed of Colombia, Panama, Canada and Nicaragua.
