The National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Consumer Protection) announced that the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MICM) is leading the conversations to resolve the conflict between the National Association of Gasoline Retailers (Anadegas) and the providers of electronic payment devices, known as verifones.
The executive director of Consumer Protection, Eddy Alcántara, reported that state institutions are participating in the search for an agreement that will allow consumers not to be affected by the withdrawal of the verifones that Anadegas plans to eliminate from more than 700 service stations as of September 25.
Dialogue Led by MICM
According to Alcántara, the conversations are being led by MICM along with Consumer Protection and other public entities, with the goal of finding a solution that will maintain payment options for users who use bank cards at gas stations.
Position of Anadegas and Consumer Concern
Anadegas announced the withdrawal of the verifones, a measure that could limit payment alternatives at hundreds of service points.
Alcántara called on Anadegas to act with “sensibility” and to allow the authorities to continue the negotiations, emphasizing that “the consumer cannot be affected”.
Commitment of Consumer Protection
The institution will maintain the follow-up of the process and the conversations with the executives of Anadegas, while the parties work to avoid the dispute limiting the available options for users.
Alcántara reiterated that any agreement must guarantee that consumers have access to different payment alternatives when acquiring fuels.
