SANTO DOMINGO.– Energy and Mines Minister, Joel Santos, explained that currently 20 renewable energy projects are being developed, which will contribute 1,006 megawatts (MW) to the energy matrix, during his participation in the conference “Governmental perspective on the growth and integration of renewable energies in the electricity generation sector of the Dominican Republic”, offered at the business breakfast organized by the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the Dominican Republic (Camacoesrd).
Santos explained how the country has increased its energy offer, diversified the matrix, strengthened the transmission system, and improved its efficiency.
He also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the development of the Dominican Republic’s energy sector.
“The Dominican energy system has undergone significant transformation, and international cooperation is key to accelerating the processes, especially in relation to technology”, expressed the minister, who also highlighted the initiatives driven by the Government in the matter.
Santos pointed out that the Dominican Republic has conditions that generate confidence in foreign investors: “Here, the permitology is much more agile, the lands are more available; that is to say, we have many advantages in that sense, and that represents a great opportunity”, he stated.
Furthermore, the minister explained that these advances are aligned with the strengthening of the use of natural gas, the boost to renewable energies, and the Burocracia Cero program, an initiative focused on simplifying government procedures in all sectors of the national economy.
The minister thanked the invitation of the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the Dominican Republic and reiterated that the Ministry of Energy and Mines is always ready to continue strengthening mutual collaboration.
For his part, Francisco “Paco” Pérez, president of the Chamber, explained that the conference aims to create a space where the main authorities of the electrical sector can share updated information and respond to the concerns of the different actors in the sector, especially Spanish companies affiliated with the Chamber.
“Fostering a culture of climate and planet care must be a priority for all those involved in this topic. That’s why, from the Chamber, we offer our partners and the business sector these meetings, which allow us to debate topics as transcendental as the governmental perspective on the growth and integration of renewable energies in the electricity generation sector of the Dominican Republic”, expressed Pérez.
Also attending the meeting were the Deputy Minister of Innovation and Energy Transition, Betty Soto; Edward Veras, executive director of the National Energy Commission; Martín Robles, general administrator of the Dominican Electricity Transmission Company; Manuel López San Pablo, general manager of the Organizing Coordinator of the Electricity System; and Pedro Valdez, of Acciona Energía, who served as moderator of the event.
