Santo Domingo, April 15, 2024. The Dominican Federation for Animal Rights (FEDDA) presented Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kelvin Cruz, with an award for his initiative to incorporate animal protection and care into the framework of the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo. The ceremony, held at the Olympic Center, was headed by FEDDA President, Lorenny Solano, who highlighted the official’s commitment to animal welfare and his willingness to promote actions that foster respect for all forms of life.
Protection of community dogs
During the event, the organization emphasized that dogs living in parks and sports facilities also form part of those spaces and deserve protection, respect, and conditions that promote responsible coexistence. FEDDA considered that the initiative constitutes an opportunity to raise awareness among authorities, athletes, international delegations, and visitors about the importance of integrating animal welfare into the organization of major sporting events.
Minister’s reaction
Upon receiving the recognition, Kelvin Cruz expressed his satisfaction and gratitude, and stated his willingness to continue collaborating with FEDDA and representatives of the animal rights movement. “It’s a pleasure to work with organizations like FEDDA to ensure the care of animals living in our cities,” the minister commented.
Testimonies and participation of civil society
“Kelvin Cruz is a great ally of animal protection. He is a person who listens, attends, and seeks solutions to the issues we present to him,” Solano expressed, highlighting the importance of strengthening ties between public institutions and organizations dedicated to rescuing and caring for animals.
The FEDDA president stated that this type of initiative contributes to creating awareness about collective responsibility towards community animals and opens opportunities for developing joint actions in their favor. The commission was made up of Mayra Arias, from the Casa de Cuadritos Foundation; Fior Batista, from the Nariz Húmeda Foundation; and Ivonne Ferreras and Gibel Orsini, from RD al Rescate. Eva González, Haidee Vargas, Zaida Mercado, Maridalia Vidal, Luis López, and Jenny Hidalgo, independent rescuers, also participated.
The present dogs
During the visit, the dogs Lilly, Tobías, Tony, and Pinto, who live in the Parque del Este and the Olympic Center, were present. Their presence symbolized the importance of including community animals in conversations about welfare and protection.
Commitment to an empathetic society
With this initiative, FEDDA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting alliances that contribute to a more empathetic and respectful society towards animals. The award given to the minister summarizes that message with a phrase: “Thank you, Minister Kelvin Cruz, for also listening to those who have no voice.”
