Cabo Rojo Airport is advancing with the official goal of being completed in February 2027, according to the President’s Minister, José Ignacio Paliza, after supervising the works in Pedernales. The project, presented as a central piece of the southern tourist development, has already exceeded $2,000 million in investment in its maturity stage.
The work, located in the municipality of Oviedo, is shaping up as the main entrance gate for visitors arriving in the South region, particularly in Pedernales and its tourist environment. In accordance with what Paliza explained, the first phase rounds $1,000 million and several components are already in an advanced stage.
During the supervision, the Minister detailed that in the Cabo Rojo Airport work is being done on the airfield, the runway, the taxiway, the drainage, the terminal building, and other pending technical points. He also indicated that the runway would be ready in September, while key parts of the supporting infrastructure have already been completed.
Among those elements are the treatment plant, the electrical station, and an important part of the underground system. In airport projects of this scale, those works are decisive because they support the future operation of the terminal and reduce the risk of delays in the final phase.
Complementary works around the Cabo Rojo Airport
Paliza also met with the developers of the access roads, who assured that they will be completed in November of this year. Those roads are essential to connect the Cabo Rojo Airport with the hotel area, tourist projects, and basic services in Pedernales.

Economic impact in Pedernales
The official stated that the economic movement generated by the Cabo Rojo Airport is already being felt in Pedernales. He cited as an example the construction of new hotels, including the Holiday, which joins the process of tourist expansion driven by the State and the private sector.
“Many stages and facets of the work are currently in the final phase”, Paliza expressed during the visit.
That dynamism coincides with the official strategy to convert Pedernales into a new tourist pole of the country, a bet that depends not only on the airport, but also on roads, energy, water, accommodation, and complementary services.
Pedernales and the integral development package
The Minister’s agenda also included a visit to the Rare Earths Laboratory and the sample processing camp extracted from the Ávila Reserve. According to the information provided, it is expected to process and analyze around 10,000 samples by the end of this year, as part of a line of work linked to the mining and scientific potential of the province.
Paliza also held meetings with community members and walked along the Malecón of Pedernales to review the progress of other infrastructure in the integral plan. All those works are under the responsibility of the Pro-Pedernales Trust, the entity in charge of the tourist development of the area.
With the official calendar still in motion, the Cabo Rojo Airport remains the most visible work on the new economic map of the southwest. If the announced deadlines are met, the terminal could open in 2027 in the midst of a transformation that is already changing the dynamics of Pedernales and its area of influence.
