Vehicle thefts decreased in the United States in 2025, but the blow to owners remains serious: most stolen vehicles do not appear again. In New York, vehicle thefts also receded, although Dominicans in different sectors of the city continue to be among the affected.
The trend was confirmed by the NICB, which reported 659,880 stolen vehicles across the country in 2025, a 23% decrease from 2024 and the lowest level in decades. The decline followed another 17% drop the previous year, marking two consecutive years of reduction after the pandemic-related surge.
Vehicle thefts: fewer cases, but high loss
Despite the improvement, the problem has not been solved. According to the source content, around 63% of stolen vehicles are not recovered. This means that thousands of victims lose their means of transportation or spend weeks without effective response, especially when the complaint is delayed.
The speed is key. The same pattern applies to motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, watercraft, and snowmobiles: the sooner the theft is reported, the higher the chances of recovery. In other words, the decline in vehicle thefts does not eliminate the economic and emotional impact of the crime.
Which brands lead vehicle thefts
The NICB analysis places among the most stolen brands Nissan, Chevrolet, Toyota Hilux, Ford, and Volkswagen. In several states, authorities have insisted on strengthening closures, alarms, GPS tracking, and immediate reports to reduce losses.
Recent data also shows that car theft continues to concentrate in urban areas and during peak seasons, although overall figures have decreased. The decline, therefore, does not equate to full security.
Vehicle thefts in New York and the Dominican impact
In New York, the state reported 38,620 thefts in 2023; then dropped to 29,837 in 2024 and to 24,206 in 2025, an approximate 19% decrease from the previous year. Nevertheless, the state continued to be among the hardest hit by this crime in the country.
For the Dominican community in NYC, the effect is direct: loss of mobility, unexpected expenses, and delays in work or family matters. In a context where vehicle thefts decrease, but recovery remains low, prevention continues to be the main defense.

Authorities and insurers maintain the warning: securing the vehicle, activating tracking systems, and reporting immediately remains the most useful way to face vehicle thefts.
