The medical expert José Antonio Maya, clinical doctor and expert of neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, declared in the court of Buenos Aires that Diego Armando Maradona, deceased on November 25, 2020, opted not to receive the attention offered to him in the last days of his life. The Argentine star denied the visit of his family doctor, neurosurgeon Luque, of clinical doctor Pedro Di Spagna and of nutritionist Luciano Spena, which according to Maya generated a lack of intervention that could have altered the course of his disease.

Maya explained that the warning signs that Maradona presented required an immediate evaluation. “The things that could have been detected required at least that the doctor could see him”, he indicated while referring to the principle of patient autonomy, the right to decide on the treatments he receives.
Among the symptoms was an edema that, according to the expert, should be evaluated to determine if additional intervention or even a new hospitalization was needed. Maya stated that Maradona was not considered a patient with high-risk heart disease at that time, since previous studies did not confirm dilated cardiomyopathy.
Conclusion of the interdisciplinary medical board
The medical board created in 2021 concluded that the actions of the team that attended the former player were “inadequate, deficient, and reckless”, since they did not attend to the alarm signals that the patient presented. Maya signed that report with his own observations.
Current judicial process
The trial is still ongoing and judges several professionals who were part of Maradona’s team. Among the accused are neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, home care coordinator Nancy Forlini, psychologist Carlos Díaz, nurse coordinator Mariano Perroni, nurse Ricardo Almirón, and doctor Pedro Di Spagna. They are accused of simple homicide with eventual intent, while the circumstances surrounding the death of the former leader of world football are investigated.
