During her recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Halle Berry shared reflections about the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of Catwoman (Catwoman), a 2004 film that was a box‑office flop, dragging Berry into a difficult moment in her film career.
In a conversation with Jimmy Fallon, Berry expressed her fondness for the movie despite the criticism and audience rejection at the time, stating: “I loved it. It was harshly criticized, but it wasn’t that terrible,” she said.
The actress mentioned that although she had expressed her displeasure with the production at the time, over the years new audiences have rediscovered it online, giving it a fresh appraisal. “It’s a vindication. Now they consider it amazing and see no problems with it,” she added.
Berry also expressed her interest in playing Catwoman again, on the condition that she could direct the film, especially after her rewarding experience directing the Netflix drama, Wound.
In 2021, she shared with Jake’s Takes magazine her desire to make a new version of Catwoman, with the perspective gained from her experience as a director. “Wound was originally written for a 25‑year‑old Irish Catholic woman, and I managed to reimagine it. I wish I could do the same with Catwoman,” she said.
Regarding what she would change for an improved version, Berry specified that she would have Catwoman “save the world, just like most male superheroes, and not just women from certain dangers.”
Berry’s original role as Patience Phillips (Catwoman), a graphic designer who acquires extraordinary abilities, centered on her fight against a dangerous corporation. Despite the innovative concept, the film grossed less than USD 83 million worldwide, on a budget of USD 100 million, and won five Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture and Worst Actress.
Demonstrating great resilience, Berry attended the Razzies to “laugh at herself.” In her speech, she thanked Warner Bros. for involving her in the project, humorously noting how she went from being at the top to experiencing one of her worst professional moments with Catwoman.
Over time, Berry has reflected on the criticism of the film, mentioning in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly the weight she felt carrying the failure, even though she was not the sole responsible party. Nevertheless, she remained resilient, confronting adversity with determination and challenging stereotypes.
