Paris.- The award for the best male team of the 2023-2024 season was given to Real Madrid, while Barcelona took the honor in the female category at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, highlighting the absence of the Madrid team in protest over the non-election of Vinicius as the winner of the main prize of the night.
The success of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League and the domestic Spanish league made them worthy of the award, however, no delegate made an appearance to receive it at the Chatelet theater in Paris.
The club’s decision not to attend the ceremony was announced this morning after it was confirmed that Vinicius would not be the winner.
Regarding the female award, it was for Barcelona, after conquering both the Champions League and the Spanish league, with the club’s president, Joan Laporta, and the captain, Alexia Putellas, who went up to receive the award.
Putellas, who was awarded the Ballon d’Or in 2021 and 2022, invited other team members present in the room to join her on stage to celebrate this recognition, an action accompanied by the Barça hymn.
“This is a very special award in our 125th anniversary year”, Laporta expressed, thanking “all those who form part of the club, especially the players”.
Laporta highlighted this award as a recognition of the club’s commitment to women’s football, freedoms, and the rights of all. He also mentioned the recent male team’s triumph in the classic, emphasizing the good moment the club is going through and the warmth received in Paris, demonstrating to be “a club loved worldwide”.
