The Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo is advancing in an ambitious urban revitalization project that has already completed the rehabilitation of several roads and heritage spaces, although the intervention of other sections is still underway. The transformation is being managed through the Integral Program of Tourism and Urban Development, which indicates a 98.02% global advance, although it maintains pending the sectors of José Reyes, Padre Billini and Duarte with advances of 69%, 92% and 96%, respectively.

State of the prioritized streets

Among the 10 roads contemplated by the program—Las Damas, Hostos, Luperón, Salomé Ureña, Duarte, 19 de Marzo, José Reyes, Las Mercedes, Arzobispo Nouel and Padre Billini—significant variations are observed. While Isabel La Católica Street and Juan Isidro Pérez Street were delivered in October 2025, sections of Palo Hincado and Duarte are still under construction. The execution by sections explains the presence of construction materials a few meters from sections already enabled.

Impact on the community

Residents, merchants and tourists are already enjoying clean and safe streets in areas such as Arzobispo Meriño and Restauración. In addition, the restoration of 17 streets, including Noria Street, and the intervention of nearby sectors to San Lázaro and San Miguel, have improved mobility and tourist appeal in the historic center.

Museums and cultural heritage

President Luis Abinader recently inaugurated the reconstruction of the Alcázar de Colón Museum, with an investment of RD$100 million from the Ministry of Tourism and US$3 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) for museography. The work included sanitation, archaeological investigations and the launch of a new exhibition. Other heritage interventions include the Puerta de la Misericordia, the San Pedro Church and the Panteón de la Patria.

Future prospects

The government projects completing the rehabilitation of 4,676 meters of streets within the program financed by the BID. Additionally, it is contemplated to recover more than 100 homes, with a goal of 140, and paint more than 130 facades. These actions aim to consolidate cultural heritage and promote sustainable tourism in the capital.
