Santo Domingo R.D.- The Dominican Baseball Federation (Fedom) announced the celebration of the VII National U8 Championship, to be held on September 14th at the San Isidro Air Base, Santo Domingo Este. This year’s edition will be dedicated in a special way to the former player of Major Leagues and future Dominican Sports Hall of Fame, Edwin Encarnación.
The president of Fedom, Juan Núñez Nepomuceno, highlighted the honoree’s career:
“Edwin Encarnación is an icon of our king sport in the Dominican Republic, a man who from the beginning gave everything so that the country would shine in the Major Leagues, also in Lidom with the Cibaeñas Eagles and as not to remember him as the fourth batter with the team that filled us with glory in an undefeated World Classic in 2013”, said Núñez.
In addition, he announced that from this edition the tournament will officially bear the name of Copa Edwin Encarnación:
“Due to his human qualities outside of baseball, the Dominican Republic feels proud to have him as part of its history, and Fedom is more than pleased to dedicate this event and announce that from 2025 in the National U8, the teams will compete for the ‘Edwin Encarnación Cup’”.
OVER 700 CHILDREN WILL COMPETE IN THE TOURNAMENT
The tournament will bring together 44 teams from all over the country, with the participation of 792 children between 7 and 8 years old. The facilities of the San Isidro Air Base will be the scenario where this children’s competition by invitation will take place.
AMONG THE CONFIRMED DELEGATIONS ARE REPRESENTATIONS OF:
La Altagracia, Punta Cana, La Romana, El Higueral de Romana, Ocoa, La Vega, Nagua, Valverde, Duarte and San Cristóbal.
Abeprosado, Independencia, Monte Plata, El Seibo, National District, as well as emblematic teams such as the Licey Tigers and the Air Force 1 and 2, hosts of the event.
Also joining are National Army A and B, Norma Díaz League, Santos Guerrero League (Peravia), Samaná, Las Terrenas, La Bruja (Puerto Plata), Altamira, Montellano, José Gómez League (Barahona), San Pedro de Macorís and Daniel García League (SPM).
Santiago Sur and Santiago Norte, Monte Cristi East and West, Cris Pérez League (Moca), López & Rumy Academy (Moca), Alex Reyes League, Team Chelo, North Zone and José y Vidal League (San Juan de la Maguana).
From Sánchez Ramírez will be present Cotuí 1, Cotuí 2, Pozo-La Mata 1 and 2, all aspiring to lift the Edwin Encarnación Cup.
