The Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (Lidom) presented this Thursday reports on legal, historical and institutional aspects of the Juan Marichal Quisqueya Stadium to the advisory commission created by the Executive Branch to determine the feasibility of building a modern baseball stadium that meets Major League Baseball (MLB) standards.
The legal and institutional part and the financial implications were presented by the league president, Vitelio Mejía Ortiz, who also serves on the advisory commission. The historical aspect was prepared by technical director Jorge Torres Ocumárez, while Valentín Contreras was responsible for presenting the current situation.
The meeting, convened by the commission president, Jorge Subero Isa, was also attended by Bandex general manager Juan Alberto Mustafá, and the lawyers Olivo Rodríguez Huertas, Angélica Noboa Pagán, Elka Scheker Mendoza and Edgar Torres Reynoso, who is the commission’s executive director, Lidom said in a statement.
During his presentation, the Lidom president referred to the legal basis, operation, composition and institutional history.
For his part, Torres Ocumárez discussed the historical aspects, the inauguration of the Juan Marichal Quisqueya Stadium, dates and scope of the works, the park’s capacity, original perimeter measurements, current measurements without the occupations, and the operation of the Carlos ‘Teo’ Cruz Coliseum.
He also covered the major international sporting events held at the stadium throughout its history.
Contreras, for his part, presented photographs and videos of occupied areas, the Lidom offices, team offices, dogouts, clubhouses and gyms. He also highlighted sanitary deficiencies, the number of fences and the original number of parking spaces.
Regarding the financial aspect, Mejía highlighted rental income to the Quisqueya Stadium Board, maintenance and renovation expenses for the facility, and the approximate cost of rebuilding the press area (Seventh Heaven) after the fire that destroyed it.
The commission took a brief tour of the park to verify its physical conditions. The meeting, in accordance with the approved critical path, is part of the information-gathering and documentation process related to the project.
