Raúl Germán Bautista.- Leo de Vries, ranked prospect number 1 of the San Diego Padres and number 3 across all Major Leagues, continues to show outstanding progress on his path toward the highest level of professional baseball.
At 18 years old, the Dominican who signed in January 2024 for US$4.2 million has already shown that his potential exceeds initial expectations. He participated in last spring training, where he left a favorable impression on the California organization.
In the current season, in Class A, Vries is batting .261 in 47 games, with 5 home runs, 27 RBIs, an OBP of .354 and an OPS of .793, numbers that reflect his offensive maturity despite his youth.
The official MLB website, in its prospects section, highlights his ability as a switch-hitter and his extraordinary control of the strike zone, something uncommon in players so young. His plate discipline allows him to make the most of his walks.
EVALUATIONS FROM MLB AND FUTURE PROJECTION:
“He only needed a bit more experience against California League pitchers before adjusting to his quality, which bodes well for how he will develop at higher levels. He has shown to be a better right-handed hitter early in his career (seven of his 11 home runs came right-handed despite having 162 fewer plate appearances that way), but he has enough left-handed swing speed that the splits are not a major concern,” the analysis adds.
The Padres have managed to make an impact in the international market in recent years, signing the number‑one prospect in 2023 (Ethan Salas) and repeating the feat in 2024 with De Vries.
ACCELERATED PROGRESS AND ANTICIPATED MATURITY:
“Just as with the catcher the previous year, San Diego quickly promoted his $4.2 million shortstop to a full season in Class A Lake Elsinore three months after signing. Vries held steady in the advanced assignment, but truly took off in the second half, posting an OPS of .996 in 35 games since July 1. A right‑shoulder strain ended Vries’s regular season in mid‑August, but he continued working as the youngest player in the Arizona Fall League.”
