The WHO announces the first trial of an ebola antiviral, marking a milestone in the fight against this deadly disease. The clinical experiment, called EBO-PEP, began on Tuesday in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to evaluate the efficacy of prophylaxis in patients exposed to the deadly strain of the virus affecting the region. This breakthrough is crucial because currently, there is no approved specific treatment nor licensed vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, responsible for the current outbreak.

Key objectives of the EBO-PEP trial

The main objective is to determine if the ebola antiviral can reduce mortality in infected patients. The WHO estimates that the trial could involve between 500 and 1,000 participants in the Ituri province, the epicenter of the epidemic. The preparations have been completed to initiate this clinical trial, according to the statement of Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Critical context about the ebola antiviral

The Bundibugyo strain of the virus has killed over 15,000 people in Africa over the past half-century, without effective therapies. The introduction of an ebola antiviral represents a vital hope for affected communities. The trial will evaluate if the administered treatment, either individually or in combination with other drugs, can reduce lethality, which reaches up to 90% in some cases.

Previous advances and existing treatments

Although there are experimental treatments such as monoclonal antibodies (ZMapp, MBP134) for other strains, the Bundibugyo strain lacks validated therapeutic options. The ebola antiviral under study, along with the monoclonal antibody MBP134, aims to fill this critical gap. Promising results in non-human primates with similar vaccines suggest a high potential for efficacy.

Global impact of the ebola antiviral

The start of this experiment in the DRC is a fundamental step for global public health. The WHO leads this initiative with international partners, seeking unprecedented speed in the response to the epidemic. The validity of the ebola antiviral could redefine treatment strategies in Africa and prevent future pandemics. Upon completion, it is expected that the ebola antiviral will become the first official therapeutic option for this devastating strain.
