The Eastern Electric Distribution Company (EDEESTE) activated 19,921 streetlights throughout 2025, a key effort to elevate urban security in its concession area. These actions spanned from January to December, expanding lighting in critical areas and improving nighttime life in communities.
Breakdown of installations and repairs
Of that total, 5,562 streetlights represent new installations in strategic sectors, while 4,491 obsolete units were replaced by efficient technology. Additionally, 3,254 were normalized after technical repairs and 3,278 over-illuminated ones were regularized, optimizing energy consumption. This balance reflects an integral approach to maintaining public lighting.
Multi-million-dollar investment in eastern provinces
The project required over RD$152 million, invested in modernizing the system in the National District, Santo Domingo East, Santo Domingo North, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, La Altagracia, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Boca Chica, and Guayacanes. These areas now have greater lighting coverage on streets, parks, and avenues, which dynamizes commerce and reduces nighttime risks.
Impact on crime reduction and perception of security
Urban security gains ground with these improvements, as adequate lighting deters crimes and raises residents’ confidence. Previous studies in the Dominican Republic indicate that efficient lighting can lower up to 20% of urban crimes in areas, according to local reports. EDEESTE emphasizes that each lit streetlight protects families, students, and traders.
“Each lit streetlight represents a safer environment for families, students, workers, and traders. At EDEESTE, we assume public lighting as a key tool for urban security and sustainable development,” expressed the company.
Historically, EDEESTE has prioritized these works since its creation in 2000, coordinating with local authorities to address community complaints. In 2024, a similar initiative installed 15,000 streetlights, laying the groundwork for the 2025 leap. Urban security is thus strengthened with energy efficiency and rapid response to social demands, maintaining the commitment to reliable service.
