Quibdó, Colombia. Darling Asprilla’s family once again has a home of their own, just 21 days after construction began on the house that replaces the one they lost in the August 10 earthquake. Asprilla had lived in that house for 20 years, but the seismic event caused the structure to collapse and left them without the place that had been their home for two decades. Now, the family officially received a new house in Quibdó, in a delivery that marks the start of a reconstruction project that envisions the construction of 500 homes in the Chocó department.
A house built in 21 days
Darling Asprilla’s home is the first delivered by the Adopt a Home program and is part of a project that envisions 1,000 homes to contribute to the reconstruction of various areas of Colombia. According to information released about the initiative, more than 6,000 people and companies have become involved in this effort. The community participated directly in the design of the homes together with the technical team in charge of the project. The process also took into account the particular conditions of Chocó, implementing a construction system adapted to the climate and geographic characteristics of the region.
The first of 500 homes for Chocó
The delivery of Asprilla’s house represents the first step of the 500 homes that will reach Chocó as part of this initiative. The project also envisions a total of 1,000 households intended to support the country’s reconstruction process. The initiative includes participation from public institutions, companies, organizations, and citizens who have decided to contribute to the recovery of affected communities. Among the entities and companies mentioned in the project are the National Government and the Milagro Fund, the Governor’s Office of Chocó, the Mayor’s Office of Quibdó, the National Army, Haceb, ABB Group, Pintuco, Rotoplast, Toptec, the Santo Domingo Foundation and the Grupo Argos Foundation. Collaboration from the communities of Chocó and artist Nicky Jam was also highlighted, as well as the individuals who have made contributions to the project.
A new beginning for Darling and his family
The delivery of this first home represents for Darling Asprilla and his family the return to a place of their own after losing their house in the earthquake. The project aims to continue building new homes in Chocó and other areas of Colombia, with the participation of communities and various sectors. The first house has already been delivered and, according to the initiative’s officials, the construction process will continue with new homes for families who need to regain a place to live.
