Centers of excellence in AI mark the beginning of an ambitious plan to position the Dominican Republic as a technological hub. The president Luis Abinader revealed during his accountability report alliances with giants like NVIDIA, which will drive talent formation and a center of excellence in AI in the country.
This agreement with NVIDIA, leader in centers of excellence in AI, places the Caribbean nation alongside powers like United States, South Korea, Israel and Singapore. The initiative seeks to generate local capabilities in artificial intelligence, a sector in global growth with annual growth projections of 37% until 2030, according to industry reports.
Alliance with Google for over US$500 million
In parallel, the Dominican Republic signed with Google a pact to build the first International Digital Exchange Port in Latin America. This infrastructure, with an investment of over US$500 million, will include a world-class data hub and submarine cables connected to United States. It will turn the country into a digital entry point for the region, strengthening connectivity between North, Central and South America.
Impact on national competitiveness
These projects elevate the position of the Dominican Republic in the digital economy. Historically, the country has invested in productive diversification, moving from a tourist-dependent economy to an innovation pole. Experts highlight that such alliances attract foreign direct investment, which grew 20% in technology last year.
Space port and satellite launch
The most audacious announcement involves LOD Holdings, with a commercial space port in Oviedo, Pedernales, for over US$600 million. After three years of negotiations, led by Burton Catledge, former director of operations at NASA, the site will allow the launch of a satellite or rocket before May 2028. This integrates the island into the space economy, valued at US$447 billion globally in 2023.
