Basketball: Mauricio Báez starts with a win in the TBS Distrito 2026
The Mauricio Báez club began its participation in the 50th Superior Basketball Tournament of the National District (TBS Distrito 2026) with a tight 80-77 victory over San Carlos in the inaugural game held at the Arena BanReservas Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto. This win allows the Mauricians to extend their streak of consecutive victories over San Carlos to five, including the last four games of the 2025 championship final series.

The contest was marked by excitement until the final seconds. San Carlos had the chance to tie the score and force overtime, but the reinforcement Malchi Richardson missed three free throws with 1.2 seconds on the clock after being fouled on a three‑point attempt. Juan Miguel Suero led Mauricio Báez’s offense with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Jhery Matos added 13 points, Gerardo Suero contributed 12, Bryan Martínez gave 11 and Shamil Paulino finished with 10, completing five players with double‑digit figures. For San Carlos, Malchi Richardson was the top scorer with 25 points and eight rebounds, followed by Josué Grullón with 14 and Josué Salazar with 10 points, five rebounds and eight assists.
Tournament organization
The 50 TBS Distrito 2026 is organized by the National District Basketball Association (Abadina), chaired by Edwin Castillo, with an Organizing Committee headed by Andrés Bautista, Administrative Minister of the Presidency, and Nelson Ramírez as commissioner. During the opening day, Seaboard “Clean Energy” Company was also recognized for its 50 years, the institution to which this special edition of the tournament is dedicated.
Edwin Castillo presented a recognition plaque to Armando Rodríguez, general manager of the company, and to Fernando Geraldino, Social Responsibility manager. The ceremony was attended by Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz, sports officials and national basketball personalities.
The tournament will continue this Wednesday with the match between Bameso and El Millón “Yireh”, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Casa de Don Virgilio Travieso Soto.
