The Minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings, Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, led a tour of the sectors La Joya, La Cambronal and Nueva York Chiquito in Santiago, to evaluate interventions in the environment of the Hospedaje Yaque. Along with the mayor Ulises Rodríguez, the governor Rosa Santos and the director of CORAASAN, Andrés Cueto, improvements that complement the renovation of the main market of the city are being analyzed.
Tour for an integral project
During the visit, Bisonó detailed that the technical surveys identify areas surrounding the Hospedaje Yaque suitable for interventions of the MIVED. The objective is to dynamize commercial activity and raise the quality of life of residents, coordinating with the City Council of Santiago. “We want a complete work that makes this space more efficient for citizens”, the minister stated.
Drainage problems and historical abandonment
Andrés Cueto highlighted the vulnerability of La Cambronal to rains, where the river level causes floods. Institutions coordinate solutions in pluvial drainage. Historically, the Hospedaje Yaque has been a key commercial center in Santiago for decades, but its environment suffered prolonged abandonment, affecting producers and vendors. In 2025, the CNCP praised the government’s commitment to its reconstruction.
Investment and planned works in the Hospedaje Yaque
The President Luis Abinader assigned more than 658 million pesos for the project: 70% to the market and the rest to sanitation in Nueva York Chiquito. The tender concludes soon, allowing the start in months. The mayor Rodríguez emphasized that the area, ignored for years, will receive concrete responses in infrastructure and housing.
The governor Rosa Santos highlighted joint actions: streets, sidewalks, containers and repairs. These measures seek to modernize installations of the Hospedaje Yaque, dignify conditions for merchants and consumers of the northern Dominican Republic.
