Artificial Intelligence and cybersecurity in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic faces a new challenge in the field of cybersecurity due to the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This phenomenon has already generated a tangible impact in the country, as evidenced during the passage of the Melisa storm in 2025, when 67% of the images and videos disseminated on digital platforms turned out to be false. This situation highlights the ability of content manipulation to generate confusion and disinformation in situations of high public attention.
Furthermore, the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) has warned about the incorporation of increasingly sophisticated mechanisms by cybercrime, including manipulated images and artificial intelligence tools. These mechanisms can enhance extortion, fraud, and disinformation schemes. At the regional level, the ESET Security Report Latin America 2026 shows that 56.3% of technology professionals identify the automation of threats through AI as their main concern.
Challenges and opportunities
The evolution of AI is also driving a new conversation about cybersecurity. 19.6% of technology professionals consider deepfakes to be one of the main threats to organizations, a perception that reaches 24.2% in the technology and computer sector and 74.6% in the manufacturing sector. However, these data also represent an opportunity for Dominican organizations to anticipate changes in the digital environment, incorporating new protection tools, strengthening verification processes, and developing the necessary capabilities to safely exploit the potential of Artificial Intelligence.
Leandro González, Product Marketing Manager of ESET Latin America, explained that “deepfakes show how technological evolution invites us to elevate our protection capabilities. For the Dominican Republic, this scenario represents an opportunity to strengthen cybersecurity culture, improve verification processes, and prepare teams to identify manipulated content”. González also highlighted that “the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence should not be seen solely from the risk perspective, but also as an opportunity to strengthen trust in the digital environment”.
The information was presented by ESET during a workshop for journalists and communicators in the framework of the ESET Business Meet, a space in which company specialists analyzed the main trends and opportunities that will mark the evolution of cybersecurity and digital transformation in the region.
