On September 4, 1963, the National District Basketball Association (Abadina) was founded. This year the organization celebrates its 63 years of existence and reiterates its commitment to strengthening the club movement and developing the sport in the Dominican capital.

50th Superior Basketball Tournament: the “Golden Wedding”

During this month, Abadina will organize the 50th Superior Basketball Tournament of the National District (TBS District 2026). The competition, which will take place at the Arena BanReservas Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto, of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, will begin on Tuesday, September 15 at 8:00 p.m. and will feature eight clubs: Mauricio Báez, San Carlos, Rafael Barias, Bameso, Huellas del Siglo, San Lázaro, El Millón and Los Prados.

Abadina’s president, Edwin Castillo, highlighted the association’s track record and the work of its leaders. He noted that the anniversary celebration will also boost the youth categories, with the start of the 2026 U14 boys and girls tournament on the same day at 6:00 p.m. The event will bring together 40 teams and will be part of the National Basketball Selections Project for the Youth Categories of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), led by Rafael Uribe.

Recognition of the sports management

Castillo emphasized the leadership and executive coordination work carried out by José “Maíta” Mercedes and Melvyn López, together with a distinguished group of national coaches. According to the president, support for the clubs and the sports leadership remains a fundamental pillar for developing new talent and the continuity of basketball in the National District.
