Within the Dominican Republic, there is an armed, technical, and professional police force known as the Dominican National Police, or simply by its acronym PN.
Its training and, above all, its education guarantee the protection and well-being of all citizens of this nation, making its preparation complex and diverse so that they are able to carry out any action that can provide comprehensive, continuous, and progressive security to any call.
National Police: Citizen security throughout the territory
Like in many other countries, the Dominican Republic has a quite robust core of personnel trained and prepared to preserve security throughout its territory, which is the National Police.
Putting into practice Article 14 of fundamental principles for action, specifically in paragraph 6 on proportionality. Quoting: “Exercise their actions based on the knowledge acquired within the process of their continuous training.”
This point highlights the importance of education and moral, social, and professional ethics within police matters, making the practice of advanced disciplines available to them so they can remain up to date at all times.
PN Headquarters in the Dominican Republic
It is known that the headquarters of the Dominican National Police is located at the National Police Palace, Leopoldo Navarro Avenue #402, Gascue, Santo Domingo, National District, Dominican Republic.
Education and Training
On May 17, 1966, a school was created dedicated to the general training of military personnel and police officers. However, on June 20, 1968, two years later, the training school for police officers was established, specifically located in San Cristóbal, directed by Eulogio Benito. Later on, a general order (No. 014-2004) was credited to it, granting it the name “National Security School”.
Later, in January 1983, the criminal investigation school was created, all to provide somewhat more advanced training in the field for those who wanted to dedicate themselves to investigative work.
Divisions
This tactical body or organization is divided into different branches to operate clearly and punctually in different areas. Among these divisions we have:
- Homicide Division.
- Central Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DICRIM).
- Central Anti-Narcotics Directorate (DICAN).
- Central Directorate of Internal Affairs (DICAI).
- General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (DIGESSET).
- Department of High-Technology Crime Investigations (DICAT).
- Preventive Police.
- Scientific Police.
- Also having a tourist police force.
Mission
Based literally on the Constitution of the Dominican Republic, Article 255 establishes that, by virtue of fulfilling the duties of the national police, its mission must be:
- First, to safeguard citizen security.
- Second, to seek to prevent all types of crime.
- Third, to pursue, investigate, and question criminal offenses that take place under the legal direction of the competent authority.
- And fourth, to maintain public order to protect public order and guarantee each person’s rights in peaceful coexistence.
On the other hand, by virtue of Law 590-16, in Article 5, the National Police of the Dominican Republic must:
- Protect the integrity and lives of every person.
- Guarantee the enjoyment of benefits and rights in terms of personal freedom.
- Neutralize and prevent organizations that engage in criminal activities.
- Maintain public order.
- Guarantee the care and respect of both public and private property.
- Offer assistance to all citizens to aid the judiciary and the public prosecutor’s office.
- Resolve each of the problems that cause discomfort to the citizenry and thus achieve the peace of every individual within society.
The Dominican National Police is a vital organ in citizen security and well-being in the DR, which is why over the years it has earned the merit of each of its inhabitants, since its work, discipline, and humanity have made it worthy of the admiration of an entire nation.
