The Artemis II mission will make history by taking a woman, an African American astronaut, and a Canadian around the Moon for the first time, more than 50 years after the last crewed orbit in 1972. This NASA feat, scheduled for February or April 2026 from Florida, includes four experts with a cumulative 661 days in space and 12 extravehicular spacewalks. The SLS rocket will propel the Orion capsule on a 10-day trajectory around Earth’s natural satellite.

Diverse crew of Artemis II

At the helm is Commander Reid Wiseman, 50, with experience on the International Space Station (ISS) since 2014, where he accumulated 165 days and two spacewalks totaling 13 hours. His key role ensures the success of Artemis II, paving the way for future lunar landings.

Christina Koch, 47, will be the first woman in lunar orbit. She holds the female record for 328 consecutive days on the ISS between 2019 and 2020, with six spacewalks, including the first all-female spacewalk. Recruited in 2013, her expertise in experiments stands out in Artemis II.

Artemis II and racial and international milestones

Victor Glover, a 49-year-old pilot, will become the first African American in this orbit. With 168 days on SpaceX’s Crew-1 and four spacewalks, he will manage the Orion systems. Named by TIME among emerging leaders in 2023, he elevates community pride in Artemis II.

Jeremy Hansen, 50, and a CSA astronaut since 2009, is the space rookie. As the first Canadian in lunar orbit, he has trained in extreme missions like NEEMO, simulating underwater and underground environments for Artemis II.

Historical context of Artemis II

Since Apollo 17 in 1972, no one has orbited the Moon. Artemis II tests systems for Artemis III, planned for no earlier than 2027, which will achieve the first lunar landing with a woman and a person of color. NASA reports weather delays, but quarantine began on January 23. Experts like Administrator Bill Nelson highlight this diversity as a pillar for sustainable lunar bases toward Mars.
