The Ministry of Energy and Mines advances in the formation of an informed citizenry about the energy sector. During the XIV Geography Week Fair, organized by the Plan LEA program of the Listín Diario, the Deputy Minister of Electrical Energy, Ricardo Guerrero Encarnación, presented the progress of the Dominican electrical system and its link with the energy transition. The event, under the slogan “Energy for the Future“, brought together students at the Museum of History and Geography of the Plaza de la Cultura in Santo Domingo.

Advances in the electrical system and emphasis on sustainability

Ricardo Guerrero detailed the diversification of the energy matrix, with notable growth in renewable sources such as solar and wind. According to sector data, renewables already represent around 20% of electricity generation in the Dominican Republic, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving service stability. He exhorted young people to practice responsible use of energy, reminding them that daily actions such as turning off unnecessary lights or optimizing household appliances directly impact costs and the environment.

“Every action counts. Efficient use not only saves money, but also forges a sustainable future”, said the official. This approach is part of national policies that aim to reduce transmission losses from the current 25% to less than 15% in the coming years, through modern infrastructure.

Energy transition and mining potential as an economic motor

Opportunities in strategic minerals

In the mining sector, Guerrero highlighted the role of the sector in the Dominican GDP, generating thousands of formal jobs and attracting foreign investment. He emphasized the rare earths, essential for electric vehicle batteries and solar panels, positioning the country in the global energy transition. Historically, mining in the Dominican Republic has grown by 10% annually since 2020, with strict environmental regulations to balance exploitation and conservation.

  • Strength of the distribution network for greater reliability.
  • State commitment to quality employment and green development.
  • Geopolitical potential of resources for clean technologies.

Interactive participation and institutional support

The ministry installed a stand with solar panels and practical demonstrations, promoting dialogue between students and experts from the Dominican Electricity Transmission Company (ETED) and Intec. Rosario Vásquez, director of Plan LEA, and Patricia Hernández of the Corripio Group praised the initiative for its educational value in building sustainability. The fair, which concluded on April 15, reinforces the responsible use culture and the energy transition as pillars of national development.

This energy transition not only responds to climate challenges, but also aligns the country with international goals of decarbonization, driving innovation and social equity in the sector.
