Political analyst and diplomat Fausto Jáquez ignited the debate on the 2028 electoral map by asserting that Senator Omar Fernández, from the Fuerza del Pueblo, would represent a considerably tougher challenge for David Collado, a leader of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno, than an eventual candidacy by former President Leonel Fernández.
An electoral rejection that makes the difference
According to Jáquez, the key lies in public perception: while Leonel Fernández carries, according to various opinion polls, a rejection level close to 38 percent, his son Omar Fernández maintains notably lower levels of rejection among the electorate. That difference, the analyst argued, could completely reconfigure the Dominican political board ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
The statements were made during an interview granted to communicators Jaime Rincón and Julio Samuel Sierra on the program “El Nuevo Diario en la Tarde”.
An opposition still divided
Jáquez also pointed to an internal obstacle that continues to weigh on the Dominican opposition: the historical dispute between former President Danilo Medina and Leonel Fernández for control of the same electoral space. That tension, he explained, has so far prevented a reunification of forces that would allow presenting a single candidacy with greater capacity to compete against the ruling party.
What lies ahead for 2028
The analyst’s conclusion is clear: a candidacy headed by Leonel Fernández would facilitate the electoral path for David Collado, while the eventual nomination of Omar Fernández —today one of the emerging figures of the opposition— would force the PRM to face a much more competitive and demanding scenario.
