The Cultura Dominicana en el Exterior presented its teaching and cultural calendar for May in New York, focused on the Reading Month. This initiative aims to strengthen the identity of the Dominican diaspora in the United States through art, education, and community gatherings. The venues in New York and New Jersey will host conferences, theater, music, and workshops starting this Thursday, May 7.
Conferences and exhibitions launch the program
The kickoff includes the conference “Lenguajes en acción: Dramaturgia y guión”, led by writer Rey Andújar, as part of FITEX 2026. Andújar notes that these actions keep the diaspora’s cultural ties alive. The next day, the exhibition “Resiliencia” by CAVDA opens, featuring works by Dominican painters in the U.S. According to 2020 Census data, more than 2.5 million Dominicans live in the country, highlighting the relevance of these events for preserving traditions.

Family, music and courses stand out on the agenda
Saturday the 9th brings “Lectura Lil’Readers” for children, coordinated by Angy Abreu and Dominican Writers, plus celebrations for mothers with Las Hermanas de Apoyo and “La Bohemia de los Bohemios”. Academically, the course “República Dominicana global: Historia e identidad” by Henrry Almonte stands out, along with “Palabras en Juego: Micrófono abierto”, which blends poetry, stories, and music.
Theater gains momentum with “En el mismo cuarto” by José Bonilla, about mental health, and “El Tic Toc en Dos Tiempos”, which explores human time. Folklore is also present in “Lo que se pierde en Santo Domingo”, with hat workshops and modeling classes.
Closing with literary festival and Mother’s Day
The month culminates with Mother’s Day alongside the Instituto Duartiano USA, Dominican cinema, and concerts. From the 29th to the 31st, the Festival of Dominican Writers brings together authors and readers. Simultaneously, Cultura Dominicana en el Exterior offers ongoing classes in guitar, piano, dance, and philosophy at its venues.
This program invites the Dominican and Latin American community to participate, promoting talent and reading. Historically, the Reading Month in the diaspora fosters connection to roots, as previous editions attracted thousands according to institutional reports. Cultura Dominicana en el Exterior reaffirms its role in uniting generations here and there.
