The Army General Commander, Major General Jorge Iván Camino Pérez, led an exhaustive tour of units of the 5th Infantry Brigade in the provinces of Barahona and Independencia. This action aims to strengthen security mechanisms on the border with Haiti, focused on eradicating the smuggling of goods and the trafficking of undocumented migrants, illicit activities that persist in the region.

Start at Fortaleza Sidney Ruddy Suero Rosa

The itinerary started at Fortaleza 2nd Lieutenant Sidney Ruddy Suero Rosa, the main headquarters of the 5th Infantry Brigade and the 15th Infantry Battalion. There, the Major General Camino Pérez held a meeting with Senator Moisés Ayala, a key figure in Barahona. From this point, the delegation advanced towards the posts of Santa Elena and Polo Abajo, continuing to the Los Arroyos-Polo detachment.

Visits to Duvergé, Jimaní and conscript formation

In the municipality of Duvergé, specifically in the A Company of the 14th Infantry Battalion, he met with Senator Dagoberto Rodríguez Adames. The route continued through Las Baitoas, La Florida, El Limón, Río Blanco, culminating in the Fortaleza El Rodeo in Jimaní, base of the 14th Battalion. Accompanied by the Brigadier General Freddy Rafael Soto Thormann, commander of the 5th Infantry Brigade, he visited 150 conscripts in formation, evaluating their preparation for surveillance tasks.

The Dominican-Haitian border registers a 15% increase in seizures of contraband in 2025, according to official reports from the Army, with emphasis on agricultural products and fuels. Historically, these inspections date back to post-2010 operations after the earthquake in Haiti, which increased migratory flows. Security experts highlight that the 5th Infantry Brigade covers 250 km of the border, integrating drone technology and mobile patrols for greater effectiveness.

  • Key points of the tour: Fortaleza Suero Rosa, Santa Elena, Polo Abajo, Los Arroyos, Duvergé, Las Baitoas, La Florida, El Limón, Río Blanco and El Rodeo.
  • Meetings with Senators Ayala and Rodríguez to coordinate local support.

These visits underscore the institutional commitment to sovereignty, in a context where smuggling generates annual losses estimated at RD$10 billion. The 5th Infantry Brigade plays a pivotal role in regional stability, aligned with national defense strategies.
