New York.- This Friday, Apple is unveiling its latest iPhone models, the 16 series, notable for a new “camera” button and designed to enhance Apple Intelligence, the company’s artificial intelligence (AI), a technology yet to be released.
The price range for the two iPhone 16 models – available in a variety of vibrant colors – is between $799 and $899, while the titanium iPhone 16 Pro models are priced between $999 and $1,199. Each model also comes in a “plus” size, which is larger.
A new button for taking photos
The major update across all models compared to their predecessors – as the company releases a new phone annually – is the addition of an exclusive new button for activating and controlling the camera, in addition to the action button incorporated into last year’s Pro 15 models.
The purpose of this new button, located on the left side, is to take photos more quickly, but it’s not just a shutter. Depending on how hard and in which direction one presses and slides their finger, it can control other features such as: exposure, depth of field, zoom, which cameras to use, and style and tone settings, which can also be adjusted from the screen.
Users can customize this button to operate the camera in compatible applications, like social media platforms.
By default, a single click opens the camera when the phone is unlocked, and another click takes a photo. Apple highlights that its new models feature a faster camera sensor.
The Pro series also adds a 48 MP “ultra wide” camera with “super high resolution with autofocus” to its phone, as well as a 5x telephoto lens that enables 120 mm photography.
More control in editing
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro introduce a new “photographic styles” feature that allows users to calibrate how the camera processes colors, skin tones, shadows, and filters, even after a photo has been taken.
Video editing improvements are even more significant, featuring Audio Mix that can prioritize voices in the footage while reducing background noise, for example.
Additionally, the 16 Pro model can transform footage into ultra slow-motion 4K videos.
AI only in beta for now
Earlier in the month, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, announced that the new models were “designed from the ground up with Apple Intelligence in mind”. Notably, a Pro range difference is that the phones are equipped with the A18 Pro chip, featuring a 16-core Neural Engine for Apple Intelligence functions.
However, customers lining up to purchase the new models today won’t see Apple’s AI on their devices unless they install a beta version for developers on their phones.
The Cupertino-based company has yet to announce official dates, but it is expected that before the end of this year in the U.S., new features such as a more intelligent Siri capable of continuing a conversation or the ability to see summaries of notifications or chains of emails or messages will be incorporated.
The first version will be available in English, but next year Apple plans to expand this AI to more languages, including Chinese – one of its biggest markets -, French, Japanese, and Spanish.
This delay might cause those interested in more generative AI on their phones to look at the latest models from Google and Samsung, which already include various functions of this technology for search, as well as for text and images.
