Santo Domingo.- Freddie Freeman hit a grand slam in the tenth inning to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a victory over the New York Yankees, winning 6-3 in the first game of the Major League Baseball World Series.
Freeman, playing through ankle discomfort, ignited celebration among the 52,394 fans at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, where the second game of the best-of-seven series will take place on Saturday. Cuban pitcher Carlos Rodón for the Yankees will square off against Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the Dodgers.
Tribute to Valenzuela
Before the start of the first game, the Dodgers, who wore a patch with the number 34 on their uniform, paid tribute to the late Mexican pitcher Fernando Valenzuela by dedicating a moment of silence. Orel Hershiser and Steve Yeager, former teammates of Valenzuela, placed the ceremonial first pitch ball around the number 34 painted on the mound.
The Dodgers unlocked the score in the fifth inning when Will Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández managed to evade the throw to home plate by Dominican Juan Soto, scoring the first run of the game.
The Yankees responded quickly in the top of the sixth inning as Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run over the left field wall at Dodgers Stadium, off Jack Flaherty, flipping the scoreboard in favor of the visitors (2-1).
Stanton’s home run, coming from the Championship Series MVP, marked his fourth consecutive in this postseason, now totaling six homers.

The Dodgers tied the game in the eighth inning when Ohtani hit a double and moved to third base due to an error by Venezuelan Gleyber Torres, from where he then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Betts.
In the tenth inning, with men on first and third, Volpe hit a ball that shortstop Edman was able to field, but could only force the out at second base, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to score the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of that tenth inning, with two outs and three men on base, Freeman hit the first pitch from Cuban Néstor Cortés over the right field wall, clinching the victory for the Dodgers. Flaherty, who started for the Dodgers, threw 5.1 innings, striking out six batters, exiting the game after Stanton’s two-run homer.
Cole fulfilled the task of controlling the Dodgers’ powerful lineup in the first game of the World Series this Friday, pitching six innings during which he gave up four hits and one run, with four strikeouts. The win went to Blake Treinen (1-0), who pitched 1.1 innings allowing one run, and the loss was credited to Jake Cousins (0-1), who gave up two runs in a third of an inning.
