Los Angeles Dodgers incorporated the agile dominican outfielder Esteury Ruiz, who was the AL leader in stolen bases in the 2023 season, from the Athletics. In exchange, the Dodgers ceded the right-handed Nicaraguan pitcher Carlos Durán.
Ruiz, 26, achieved an impressive total of 67 stolen bases last year, being the main AL leader in stolen bases.
Despite promising statistics, he faced some challenges, including a left wrist strain injury that caused an absence and a stint in the minor leagues. After being designated for assignment by the Athletics last Sunday, he could be transferred to Los Angeles.
In his three years of career in the major leagues, Ruiz has added 73 steals in 245 games playing for Athletics, San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers.
While his ability to steal bases stands out, he has been caught 19 times. His speed and defensive skills make him a constant threat on the bases.
On the other hand, Carlos Durán, 23, showed a notable performance in the minor leagues last season with a 3.71 ERA across three levels within the Dodgers’ system.
In his most recent start for Triple-A Oklahoma City this year, he pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only one run and recording eight strikeouts.
This trade transfers Ruiz to an organization with a history of success, including a World Series win last year, with the expectation that his speed and defensive skills will enhance the Dodgers’ lineup for the 2025 season.
