Community members of El Caño de Yamasá demand the road construction that connects their area with Guanuma in Santo Domingo Norte, a 13‑kilometre essential route for local development.

In a recent meeting, residents of the Sugarcane Zone highlighted how the poor condition of this road daily affects thousands of families. The road construction would not only facilitate travel, but also boost the agricultural and livestock economy of the region, according to local leaders.

Urgent demand for road construction in Yamasá

Decades of abandonment in El Caño

Anderson de los Santos, political leader, visited the community and reiterated the government’s commitment to this project. “Only the president can carry out this El Caño‑Guanuma road construction“, he said, trusting that Luis Abinader will answer the call.

Roberto Valdés, president of the Yagua neighborhood board, explained that the road has not received significant maintenance since 2003. This has eliminated public transport, leaving residents paying up to 500 pesos for short trips to Yamasá or Guanuma.

Impact on 12 dependent communities

At least 12 localities such as El Vigía, Jagua, Los Jovillos, Batey Yagua, La Maya and Najayo depend on this route. Milk producers – thousands of liters daily – and agricultural crops face losses due to marketing difficulties. In addition, it blocks access to 9‑1‑1 services, school transport and ambulances.

  • Daily dairy production affected by impassable roads.
  • Lack of education and health due to road isolation.
  • High cost of motorbike taxis and private vehicles.

Historical context and call to the Ministry of Public Works

The affected have been waiting for a definitive solution for nearly 40 years. Historically, Monte Plata has seen similar promises in rural infrastructure, but few implementations, according to local records of neighborhood demands since the 80s. This road construction would serve as a relief for Yamasá and the province.

The current deterioration worsens problems in an area where agriculture is the main livelihood. Rural development experts note that paved roads could increase incomes by 30‑50% in areas like this, based on similar projects in Monte Plata.

Community members urge President Luis Abinader to instruct the Ministry of Public Works to start the road construction. The collective pressure seeks to transform El Caño into a connected productive hub.

This road construction represents not only asphalt, but progress for families forgotten on the Dominican map.
