Santo Domingo, DR.- In a sincere and deep conversation on the “Yayo Pinto Podcast” program, Dominican legend Pedro Martínez offered an empathetic perspective on the offensive slump that Juan Soto is going through in his first season with the New York Mets.
Far from falling into easy criticism, the Hall of Famer appealed to his own experience to explain what the young hitter is living:
“That’s normal, that happens… and I’m the only one who can possibly identify that”.
Martínez shared how he also faced similar pressure when he was transferred from the Montreal Expos — a franchise with little media exposure — to the Boston Red Sox, one of the most demanding markets in baseball.
“I became the highest-paid player in the majors and all the attention turned to me. There was no exposure in Montreal, but in Boston every one of my pitches had a calculated price”.
Thanks to that past, Pedro claims that he understands what Soto is facing at this moment in his career. The former Dominican pitcher emphasized that the key is to maintain humility despite the expectations and criticism.
“I understand what Juan is living. They also analyzed every pitch, every inning, for what I earned. But I never lost humility, that was key to staying firm and performing”.
