The project is led by María Inés Barría, a specialist from the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad San Sebastián, and focuses on the Andes strain, the only known one capable of being transmitted between humans.

Hantavirus is a zoonotic infection mainly associated with contact with infected rodents or environments contaminated by their secretions. In South America, the Andes strain has been of special concern because, unlike other variants, it maintains the capacity for person-to-person spread, which increases the risk in localized outbreaks.

In biomedical science, a promising advance does not equate to an immediate solution: efficacy, safety, and real protective capacity under controlled conditions must first be demonstrated.

For now, the research by María Inés Barría represents an important signal for Chilean science and for the regional surveillance of emerging diseases. If it manages to consolidate, it could become one of the most relevant tools to face a virus that, although infrequent, continues to be a serious threat in exposed sectors of the continent.
