Truce in Tariff Hikes Amid Crisis in Iran

Tregua en Alzas de Tarifas

The transportation cargo unions in the Dominican Republic have decided to grant a truce in tariff hikes for up to 20 days, absorbing the increases in fuels derived from the conflict in Iran. This measure, driven by the National Federation of Dominican Transport (Fenatrado) and the Cargo Drivers Union, aims to mitigate the impact on the local economy while waiting for responses from the Government.

Decision of the seven unions in key ports

In a press conference, Miguel Matos, vice president of Fenatrado and coordinator of the ports of Santo Domingo and Haina, explained that the seven heavy transportation guilds will maintain stable tariffs between 15 and 20 days. “To maintain the economy stable, we have added ourselves to the entrepreneurs to avoid speculation”, declared Matos, highlighting the effort to avoid a domino effect in prices of goods and services.

Context of the truce in tariff hikes due to oil

The announcement comes amid the jump in global oil prices, which this April 2026 exceed $90 per barrel according to international market data, driven by tensions between Iran and Israel. Historically, the Dominican Republic has faced similar hikes: in 2022, 50% increases in diesel raised logistics costs by 20%, according to reports from the Central Bank. Experts such as economist Henry Hebrard point out that this truce in tariff hikes alleviates inflation, which is around 4.5% annually, but urges diversifying energy imports.

Warning and call to authorities

The unions warn that, without international improvements or local interventions, they will review tariffs post-plaza. Matos emphasized: “We give truce in tariff hikes to the increase in transportation so that the country continues stable”. This initiative reflects a commitment to stability, in a sector that moves 70% of the national cargo through ports, according to data from the Dominican Port Authority.

  • Seven signatory unions absorb operational costs.
  • Period: 15-20 days from the announcement.
  • Impact avoided: Immediate increase in freight and basic products.

The truce in tariff hikes represents a respite in the midst of global pressures, but puts pressure on energy policies. Fenatrado urges concrete solutions, such as subsidies or strategic reserves, to avoid future disruptions in the Dominican supply chain.
