Yankees de Nueva York buscan adquirir a Oneil Cruz para fortalecer su alineación

By Raúl Germán Bautista.- The New York Yankees have opened talks with the Pittsburgh Pirates with the intention of acquiring Dominican outfielder Oneil Cruz, according to Jon Heyman, analyst for MLB Network.

The interest of the Bronx Bombers is justified by the athletic condition and offensive profile of the 26‑year‑old player, who has demonstrated an uncommon combination of power and speed.

“And it’s not for nothing,” adds Heyman, “since Cruz, 26, would add power, speed and youth, which could even open the doors to a long‑term deal.”

Cruz has a batting average of .219 this season, with 16 home runs in 329 at‑bats. Additionally, he is tied for the lead in stolen bases across the Major Leagues, with a total of 33 steals.

Although his natural position is shortstop, he now plays center field; however, the Yankees could use him as a designated hitter.

“Although there doesn’t seem to be a clear spot for Cruz on the Yankees — Cody Bellinger is the starting center fielder and Anthony Volpe is entrenched at shortstop (Cruz’s former position) — Cruz would undoubtedly add a power/speed dimension to New York’s lineup while they pursue the Tiles in the East Division of the American League,” Heyman added.

The current situation of the Pittsburgh Pirates is unfavorable: the team sits in last place in the National League Central Division, 19.5 games behind the first place. This context would make it more likely for one of their young figures to leave in exchange for prospects or future reinforcements.

The Yankees, for their part, are the most decorated team in MLB history and currently sit in second place in the American League East, as well as leading one of the wildcard spots heading toward the postseason.
