The participation of Dominican scientists in the 2025 Ordinary General Assembly of the Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development (CYTED) has resulted in the occupation of key positions within the regional organization. The meeting, held in Asunción, Paraguay, brought together representatives from 14 Ibero-American countries and consolidated the leadership of the Dominican Republic in scientific and technological cooperation.
The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Genaro Rodríguez, led the Dominican delegation and highlighted the alignment between CYTED’s priorities and the public policies promoted by MESCyT. The Dominican Republic maintains an active role in various thematic networks of the Program and seeks to expand its participation in strategic regional projects. The presence of Dominican scientists in these spaces reinforces the visibility and impact of national talent on the international scientific scene.
Appointment of area managers
During the afternoon session, the Assembly approved the Program’s accounts for the year 2025 and proceeded with the election of the new CYTED Area Managers. Among those appointed is Yessica Castro, who will assume responsibility for the Industrial Development area, representing the Dominican Republic. This appointment demonstrates regional recognition of the technical and professional capacity of Dominican scientists.
Strategic areas and thematic lines
The thematic lines approved for scientific cooperation in 2026 include agri-food, health, industrial development, sustainability, information technologies, science and society, and energy. Among the strategic topics are food safety, sustainable alternatives to pesticides, climate change impact on chronic diseases, modernization of the mining industry, artificial intelligence applied to industrial processes, local climate governance, AI literacy in educational settings, and hybrid energy systems based on the circular economy. The participation of Dominican scientists in these areas strengthens regional collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Balance and outlook
The Assembly reviewed participation indicators, evaluated the performance of the thematic networks, and presented the results of the CYTED 2025 Call. Additionally, the process to elect the next CYTED Secretary General began, whose selection will define the strategic direction of the Program in the coming years.
