New York. OpenAI has denied responsibility for the suicide of a 16-year-old youth who took his own life after interacting with ChatGPT for months. The company argues that the case is due to the misuse of the tool and not to flaws in its design or operation.
In a document filed in the California Superior Court, OpenAI maintains that the injuries and damages alleged by the victim’s parents were caused or contributed to by the misuse, unauthorized, unforeseeable, and inappropriate use of ChatGPT by the teenager, Adam Raine. The company states that the tool was not designed to be used by minors under 18 without supervision, and that Raine violated several rules of the terms of service.
Misuse and ignored warnings
OpenAI highlights that the platform warns users not to rely on its responses as the sole source of truth. Furthermore, it asserts that during the conversations, ChatGPT insisted more than a hundred times that Raine seek professional help. The company also points out that the youth ignored warnings and failed to heed the evident signs of distress he displayed.
The parents’ lawsuit
Adam’s parents, Matt and Maria Raine, filed a lawsuit in August, claiming that ChatGPT actively helped their son explore suicide methods. They consider OpenAI and its owner, Sam Altman, responsible for marketing the GPT-4o version despite known safety issues.
