In Mother’s Month, the institution promotes early detection, prevention, and self-care with a clear message that seeks to create awareness about the importance of taking care of one’s health before it’s too late, under the premise that taking care of oneself is also an act of love
Santo Domingo. In the framework of Mother’s Month, the Oncoserv Oncological Treatment Center launched the campaign Caring for yourself is your greatest act of love, a consciousness-raising initiative focused on cancer prevention and female self-care in the Dominican Republic.
The campaign arises from a reality that the institution’s specialists constantly observe in consultations: women who arrive with diagnoses in advanced stages after having postponed their preventive check-ups for years due to economic reasons, lack of time, or prioritizing the well-being of their families over their own health.
“Many types of cancer cannot be completely prevented, but they can be detected early”, explained Dr. Laura Mancebo, oncological radioterapist at Oncoserv. “Screening tests allow identifying the disease in initial stages, significantly increasing the chances of success in treatments and reducing the need for more aggressive therapies”.
Among the routine evaluations that Oncoserv recommends are the Papanicolaou test, HPV detection, breast profile, blood pressure control, blood analysis, and gastrointestinal studies, adjusted to the age and risk factors of each patient. The institution emphasizes that annual prevention should start from 25 years old and be reinforced especially after 40, the stage at which oncological risks increase.
The initiative also seeks to highlight the difficulties faced by many patients in accessing specialized oncological treatments, especially people with limited resources who find economic barriers and long waiting times.
In this context, Oncoserv highlighted the work of the Oncoserv Foundation, an entity that provides economic support and emotional accompaniment to patients throughout their treatment process, as well as developing assistance programs and awareness-raising campaigns for those who do not have sufficient economic backing.
Furthermore, the institution emphasized that its comprehensive care model brings together specialists in clinical oncology, oncological radioterapy, surgical oncology, gynecological oncology, advanced diagnosis, and psycho-oncology, allowing for a human and multidisciplinary accompaniment to each patient.
“Mom always takes care of everyone. Today we want to remind her that she also deserves to be taken care of. Prevention is love and the greatest act you can do for yourself and your family”, expressed the institution.
Throughout the month of May, the campaign will be developed through media tours in television and radio programs, educational content on social media through the @oncoserv account, as well as evaluation days and talks directed at communities and institutions.
With this campaign, Oncoserv continues to generate awareness about the importance of acting in time and reminding Dominican women that taking care of their health is also a way of taking care of those they love most.
