In recent years, Dominican consumers have noticed that some brands that were once part of their daily routine have disappeared, reduced to scarce availability, or, on occasion, have survived with less presence. These transformations were documented in 2018 by various national media outlets, which compiled the products that were almost no longer found in Dominican establishments.
Emblematic brands that lost strength
- Nestlé Triangles: popular in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, had reduced to almost non-existent presence in 2018.
- Dubble Bubble: the popular bubble gum also figured among the brands with low visibility.
- Mirinda: despite being a recognized drink, was already considered scarce in Dominican stores.
- Gamesa Delights: although the brand remains active, its line of cookies was among those with less presence.
- Yupi Cola and Yoguetas: were also pointed out as having scarce availability.
Some brands persist
Among the products that, although not as present as before, are still marketed, stand out Chubby, which continues to be sold in the Dominican Republic, and La Benedicta, whose blue-bottled cider remains in the market after its launch in 2005 by Bodegas Barceló.
The case of the SkimIce esquimalito
Launched by Quala in 2002, SkimIce was an iconic figure in Dominican streets. Its presence has been reduced over the years, although it is still remembered by those who grew up with it.
Registers and current presence
The National Office of Industrial Property registers the Gamesa CLÁSICAS Delicias brand as related to cookie products. Likewise, the company La Tabacalera indicates that La Benedicta cider, introduced in 1964, competed with international brands until the 1990s and remains available today.
