Chicago.- Major League Baseball (MLB) has placed Dominican pitcher Luis Leandro Ortiz of the Cleveland Guardians on non-disciplinary paid administrative leave due to an ongoing investigation. The measure will remain in effect until the end of the All-Star break.
The information was confirmed by the league this Thursday via an official statement, and initially reported by Tim Stebbins of MLB.com.
“Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through the end of the All-Star break due to an MLB investigation. We will have no further comment until the investigation is complete.”
Ortiz was scheduled to start this Thursday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, but following the announcement, the Guardians plan to call up left-hander Joey Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus to make the start.
“The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave pursuant to an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation. The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time and will respect the league’s confidential investigation process.”
SEASON STATS:
In his first campaign with the Guardians, Ortiz has made 16 starts, posting a 4.36 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, 96 strikeouts, and 42 walks in 88.2 innings pitched.
The 26-year-old right-hander arrived in Cleveland last December as part of a trade with the Pirates involving Spencer Horwitz.
