Santo Domingo.– The former president of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández, has proposed the creation of a national dialogue table that includes productive sectors and other relevant actors in the country, with the aim of addressing the challenges arising from the tariff policies implemented by the government of the previous US president, Donald Trump.
Through a communication distributed through his official media, the leader of Fuerza del Pueblo declared: “In the face of the tariff measures established by the Trump administration, I consider it indispensable that the executive convene a dialogue table with the productive sectors and other significant entities in the country, with the objective of designing a strategy that reduces the negative effect on our economy”.
Fernández highlighted that this dialogue must expand to cover not only external challenges, but also to explore the advantages that the current international context can offer:
“From Fuerza del Pueblo, we see it as essential that this dialogue allows us to identify the opportunities that the new world order presents to us, in order to take advantage of them in the interest of the nation”, he expressed.
The former president also emphasized the importance of including the migratory problem in the discussions of this table:
“A question that requires being treated within this forum is the migratory one. The concern of the population in the face of the lack of control of this issue is palpable, since it affects fundamental services such as health, education, employment, among others”, he noted.
Additionally, he warned about the social tensions generated by irregular migration:
“The increase in unregulated migration is causing social tensions that cannot be ignored. Therefore, I urge the government to give it the necessary priority”.
Fernández reaffirmed his belief that paying attention to the voices of the people and seeking consensus are the keys to effective governance: “I have constantly stated that attending to the people is the most effective way to govern, and that through dialogue, understanding and precise solutions can be found”.
