The Haitian Embassy in the Dominican Republic issued on Friday a statement in which it distances itself from the expressions made by several members of the Haitian football team after their 4-1 victory over the Dominican Republic team at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium on Thursday. The diplomatic mission noted that the players’ words corresponded to the context and tension inherent to sporting competition and therefore do not represent the stance of the embassy nor the Haitian Government.
Respect for Dominican sovereignty
The statement reiterated the Haitian representation’s respect for Dominican sovereignty, territorial integrity and institutions, and highlighted the historic, cultural and human ties that bind the two countries.
Reaction to the match
The pronouncement comes after the reactions generated following the CONCACAF Nations League encounter, where the Haitian national team defeated the Dominican side by a 4-1 scoreline.
