Planta Energía 2000

The Energía 2000 power plant, currently under construction in Manzanillo, is shaping up to be one of the most modern and efficient units in the region. With a capacity of 414 megawatts, its integration into the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) is scheduled for early 2026. The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, highlighted the importance of this project for the stability and operational security of the Dominican electrical system.

Progress and construction schedule

During a recent supervisory visit, Minister Joel Santos and members of the Electrical Cabinet verified the progress of the work and compliance with the schedule. Santos emphasized that the Energía 2000 plant incorporates combined cycle technology, in both the gas and steam turbines, designed under the highest international standards. This technology will reduce the average operating costs of the integrated electrical system.

Impact on the national energy matrix

The commissioning of Energía 2000 represents a milestone for the Dominican energy matrix. The project is part of the Government’s strategic initiatives to strengthen electricity generation, making it more resilient and sustainable, and to guarantee a firm supply base in the coming years. In addition, it will help balance the historical concentration of generation in the eastern region, reinforcing the supply in the northern part of the country.

Commitment and institutional support

Jaime Santana, president of Energía 2000, assured that the work is progressing according to schedule and reiterated the commitment to deliver the plant within the expected timeframe. State support has been fundamental to ensuring that this strategic plant begins operations on schedule. During the visit, Minister Joel Santos was accompanied by representatives of the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED), the Electricity Superintendency, and the National Energy Commission (CNE).

Context and background

The construction of Energía 2000 began in December 2022 and has become one of the largest and most modern generation units in the country. Its operation will not only improve the reliability of the electrical system, but will also strengthen the availability of service throughout the national territory. The Energía 2000 plant in Manzanillo is a clear example of the commitment to modernization and efficiency in the Dominican energy sector.

The entry into operation of Energía 2000 in Manzanillo in early 2026 will mark a before and after in the history of electricity generation in the Dominican Republic. The Energía 2000 plant will not only contribute 414 megawatts, but will also be a benchmark of modernity, efficiency, and sustainability for the region. The Energía 2000 plant in Manzanillo is a decisive step toward a more robust and reliable electrical system.
