The search for survivors among the rubble of the strong earthquake that struck Colombia intensified, two days after the tremor toppled buildings, deformed roads, and left at least 265 people dead, according to the latest toll from authorities.
A rescue that restored hope
In Pereira, one of the cities hardest hit by the seismic movement, rescue teams managed to pull Daniela Largo out alive after more than 12 hours of uninterrupted work. Rescuers managed to free one of her arms by opening a small hole among the rubble; once contact was established, medical personnel set an IV, stabilized her, and transferred her on a stretcher to receive specialized care.
Thousands of families remain affected by the disaster, as Colombian authorities set up temporary shelters and coordinate the reception of international humanitarian aid for the hardest-hit areas.
The first major test for the new government
The emergency represents the first major challenge for the recent administration of the Colombian president, who has had to deploy to the field to supervise relief efforts and convey a message of support to the communities affected by the earthquake.
