In the framework of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Dominican Republic and Somalia announced the formal establishment of diplomatic relations. The Dominican foreign minister, Víctor (Ito) Bisonó, and the Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, signed a joint statement that ratifies the start of diplomatic ties according to the Vienna Convention.
With this agreement, Somalia became the 188th country with which the Dominican Republic maintains diplomatic ties, expanding its international presence and consolidating its participation in the global community.
Exemption of visa agreements and bilateral meetings
Bisonó also signed an exemption of visa agreement on behalf of the Dominican Government, with the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono. According to the convention, holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports will be able to enter, exit, and transit through the territories of the other country without a visa for a maximum of 30 days.
Additionally, the foreign minister held meetings with the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Margus Tsahkna, reviewing and strengthening relations with partners from different regions.
The foreign minister also accompanied the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, in a meeting with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, reinforcing the Dominican presence in the international scene.
