The mayor of Monte Plata, Hector Figari, leads direct monitoring of the areas most hit by the recent flood. After the intense rains, he visits vulnerable communities to evaluate flooding and riverbank rises that left homes flooded and material losses.

Immediate assistance activated

From today, the authorities of Monte Plata distribute food and basic supplies to affected families. This rapid response aims to alleviate urgent needs in a context where floods are recurrent in the region, according to historical data from the Emergency Operations Center (COE). In 2025, similar events caused evacuations in nearby provinces, affecting more than 5,000 people.

Visit to vulnerable sectors

During his inspection, Figari prioritized homes with structural damage. Experts from the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) point out that the rivers in Monte Plata overflow easily due to deforestation and uncontrolled urbanization, exacerbating the impact of each flood.

  • Delivery of food rations to over 200 families.
  • Evaluation of collapsed infrastructure.
  • Coordination with cleaning teams.

Short-term solutions

Figari announced that next week they will begin repairs on streets and drains in Monte Plata. This plan responds to active weather alerts, where nine demarcations are in yellow due to frontal systems, according to official reports. Historically, Monte Plata registers peaks of precipitation in March, with averages of 150 mm that saturate clay soils.

The mayor’s action highlights the importance of preparation before climatic phenomena in the Dominican Republic. Communities in Monte Plata expect not only temporary help, but also long-lasting preventive measures against future floods. This municipal effort reinforces local resilience in a year marked by intense climate variability.
