Before his presidency in Colombia, Duque was a part of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, D.C., where he took on the role of head of the Division of Culture, Creativity, and Solidarity. In this capacity, he championed the Orange Economy, advocating for the view that cultural and creative industries could serve as essential drivers for economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In collaboration with Felipe Buitrago, Duque authored the book “La Economía Naranja: Una Oportunidad Infinita,” published in 2013. This text has become a fundamental resource for comprehending the potential of creative and cultural industries as pillars of economic development. The book illustrates how creativity and innovation can act as renewable and endless resources, contributing to sustainable growth and job creation.

A notable achievement in Iván Duque’s political career has been the enactment of the Orange Economy Law in Colombia. This legislation creates a regulatory framework and incentives to encourage the growth of creative and cultural industries in the nation. It includes tax exemptions allowing new creative enterprises to benefit for up to seven years, thus fostering their formalization and growth in the sector.

Furthermore, it establishes financing funds for the development of cultural infrastructure and support for creative projects. It also promotes educational and training programs in various creative disciplines to ensure the continuity and development of these sectors for generations.

Sobre Foro Caribe Naranja: “Exportación de Creatividad hecha en República Dominicana”

The Caribbean Orange Forum is an initiative aimed at bringing to the public agenda issues concerning the Orange Economy and Creative Industries in the country and the Caribbean region, highlighting the different stakeholders within this sector and their significant contribution to the economy and, importantly, their direct impact on community quality of life.

This year, the Forum focuses on “Exporting Creativity made in the Dominican Republic” with the goal of continuing the dialogue around this sector that diversifies our economy, creates quality jobs, and positions the country as the creative hub of the Caribbean, promoting sustainable economic development that attracts foreign investment and strengthens the global image of the Dominican Republic.

Caribbean Orange is a platform consisting of three projects that unfold throughout the year. Beyond the Forum, it includes La Silla Naranja, a seasonal series aimed at spotlighting various stakeholders from the country’s creative and cultural industries, who demonstrate the potential of our country to continue being recognized as a creative reference in the Caribbean through their visions and stories.

The third project, Orange Connection, features targeted talks that facilitate the exchange of ideas with the participation of experts and personalities from different creative industry guilds, who share their visions and experiences.

This year’s event is sponsored by BANRESERVAS, Banco Popular, AES Dominicana, the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santo Domingo, ADOEXPO, and CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
